According to Biletsky: "The Russians have launched a chemical weapons strike on Mariupol, on the Azovstal plant. If we talk about the practical side of the strike, it's not significant. Three people have clear signs of chemical warfare poisoning, but without catastrophic consequences...

The chemical attack on Mariupol means only one thing: the Russians are unable to take Mariupol and the Ukrainian defenders. They have no choice but to use indiscriminate banned weapons."

Details: The casualties are in a satisfactory condition, he said.

Background:

  • Just hours before, the Russians had threatened that they were planning to seal off Ukrainian fighters at the Azovstal plant in Mariupol and use chemical weapons against them.
  • President Joe Biden said the US would respond if Russian President Vladimir Putin used weapons of mass destruction, particularly chemical weapons, but the response would depend on the situation.
  • The 36th Independent Marines Brigade, taking part in the defence of Mariupol against the Russian invaders, published a statement to Ukrainians in Russian. The statement said that 11 April might be the last battle for all defenders of Mariupol and that the Ukrainian military command had not contacted the fighters for a fortnight.
  • Valerii Zaluzhnyi, the commander in chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, subsequently responded and assured that the command had communication with the defence forces in Mariupol. He added that the details of the defensive operation of the Ukrainian defenders should not be a matter of public discussion.
