A border guard in Russian-blocked Mariupol sacrificed his life to save his fellow soldiers and destroyed a radio station to prevent it from being captured by Russian troops.
Source: Andriy Demchenko, spokesman for the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, in a commentary for Ukrainska Pravda
Details: State Border Guard Service spokesman said that the officer in question had been involved in combat operations alongside his comrades and fellow Mariupol defenders since the very beginning of the Russian attack on Mariupol.
On 9 April he was covering his unit in a battle with the Russian occupying forces and ended up alone and encircled by enemy troops. The officer, whose name is not disclosed, was wounded. He destroyed the radio station [where he was encircled] in order to prevent Russian troops from capturing it.
According to Demchenko: "Aware of the danger the Russian capture of the radio station would entail, the officer went on air one last time: he said "Slava Ukraini!" after which he blew himself up. Eternal memory to this fallen defender."
