Hackers break websites of Russian federal agencies

Hackers broke into the websites of several Russian federal agencies and replaced them with cartoons against the war with Ukraine.

Details: The hack affected the sites of the Russian Ministry of Culture, the Federal Statistics Service Rosstat, the Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media (Roskomnadzor), the Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS), and the Russian Federal Penal Correction Service.

None of the known groups of hackers have so far claimed responsibility for the attack. 

Background:

  • After Russia began its full-scale war against Ukraine the group Anonymous declared cyberwar against the Russian authorities, politicians and state propagandists.
  • Hackers broke into the site of the Russian Ministry of Defence and leaked the personal information of employees of the occupying government agencies.
  • On 26 February, hackers brought down the sites of the Kremlin, Roskomnadzor, the Russian Ministry of Defence, Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and a range of Russian State news agencies, and played Ukrainian music on the State television channels. The hackers also broke into the Government website of the Chechen Republic, the leadership of which supports Putin and the Russian war against Ukraine.
  • On 28 February, hackers conducted a major attack on Russian media sites — the sites affected included the Russian News Agency ТАSS, the Russian newspaper Izvestia, Forbes.ru, and Fontanka. The sites were replaced with messages calling on users to "stop this madness" and "not send their sons and husbands to certain death". 
  • On 7 March, hackers from the group Anonymous claimed a hack of Russian steaming services and State television channels.
