Most fires in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone are currently localised, but burning continues in some – small – sites.

According to Strilets: "Over 30 fires have been recorded in the last 2 weeks. In the last week, 5 additional fires were recorded. As of today, most of these fires are localised. However, small areas where burning continues remain."

Details: Strilets said that the conditions are not favourable right now for the spread of fires.

The Minister also commented on reports of the rising levels of Caesium: "All increases are relative. For example, if yesterday the level was slightly lower and today it is slightly higher, it doesn’t mean that there is a threat to health."

Citing the conclusions of scientists, he noted that currently there is no threat to the health of the people of Ukraine since the concentration of Caesium in the air does not exceed the maximum allowable thresholds.

Background: Earlier, Ukraine informed IAEA, the International Atomic Energy Agency, about the forest fires raging in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone.
