Ukraine warns Hungary: Ukraine’s neighbours will be the next target of Russia

The Foreign Ministry of Ukraine responded to recent statements by Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó with a warning that if Russia achieves its goal in Ukraine, it will take on Ukraine’s western neighbours.

This is stated by Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko in a comment, provided to  "European Pravda".

As Nikolenko noted, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó emphasized, that it’s necessary to avoid the spread of war beyond Ukraine’s territory and the direct conflict between NATO and Russia.

"In his (Szijjártó – ed.) opinion, in order not to provoke Russia, Hungary should not support the closure of the Ukrainian skies and the deployment of peacekeeping operations, as well as should not allow the transit via Hungary military aid to the Ukrainian army. "Do not provoke Russia" is a common argument when it’s needed to give Russia more room for aggression, " - said a Foreign Ministry spokesman.

Nikolenko stressed that it is a mistake to believe that Hungary, like any other European country, exists in a vacuum.

"Our state is now actually defending NATO's eastern border. If Russia manages to achieve its criminal goal in Ukraine, our neighbours will be the next target. Russian ambassadors abroad are now openly talking about this," Nikolenko said.

Just yesterday, according to him, there was evidence that the Russian FSB is trying to shake up the situation in Zakarpattia region, using the Hungarian factor. On March 21, a sabotage group preparing to commit crimes in Ukraine was neutralized in Uzhhorod.

"Hungary has always positioned itself as a defender of the rights of Hungarians abroad. We call on Hungary to openly condemn this provocation by Russia and use its well-developed channels of communication with Moscow to prevent any provocations to incite ethnic hatred in Ukraine," Nikolenko said.

Earlier Peter Szijjártó said the day before that Hungary would not support EU sanctions against Russia in the energy sector, and also opposed the no-fly zone over Ukraine and the peacekeeping mission proposed by Poland.
