"EUROPEAN TRUTH" - TUESDAY, MARCH 15, 2022, 15:57

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy believes that Ukraine will not become a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation despite NATO's "open door" policy.

According to European Truth, he said this in an address to the leaders of the Joint Expeditionary Force, led by Great Britain.

"Of course, Ukraine is not a member of NATO. We understand that, we are not crazy. For years we have been hearing about the alleged open door, but we have also heard now that we cannot enter. And this is true, and it must be acknowledged. I am glad that our people are beginning to understand this and rely on themselves and the partners who are helping us," Zelenskyy said.

He emphasised that currently Ukraine is not asking for the activation of Article 5 of the Treaty. It is only asking for the skies to be closed in order to prevent Russian air strikes.

"We need new formats of cooperation, new determination. And if we cannot enter the open door, we must cooperate with communities that will help us and protect us, such as yours. And have reliable guarantees," he said.

The Joint Expeditionary Force is a military task force led by the United Kingdom. The force may consist, if necessary, of units from Denmark, Finland, Estonia, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Sweden and Norway.

Background: Ukraine, which is a close partner of the Alliance and is directly suffering from Russian aggression, was not invited to a meeting of Alliance leaders on February 25, although Sweden and Finland were invited.
