Ukrainian Army Working on Revamping Sergeant Corps

Work to revamp the sergeant corps in the Ukrainian Armed Forces in order to promote army professionalism has been started, the Head of the Sergeant Management Department of the Ukrainian General Staff Oleksandr Kosynskyi said during a press briefing on Tuesday, August 9, Ukrinform reports.

According to the General Staff, a professional sergeant corps should take over many duties that are currently performed by officers. Officer should first of all be strategists and decision-makers, plan educational activities and operations while sergeants need to be the ones who implement these decisions together with privates.

The planned reorganization and redistribution of duties is supposed to bring the Ukrainian Army closer to NATO standards. The work was started in May 2016, after the President asked the Minister of Defense to ensure the Ukrainian Army has a functional sergeant corps.
