Marshal of Polish Senate Warns Ukraine against Adopting Resolution on Genocide

Thursday, 4 August 2016, 14:07

The Marshal of the Polish Senate Stanislaw Karczewski warned the Ukrainian Parliament against adoption of a resolution on the genocide of Ukrainians by Poles, Polskie Radio informs.

A draft Resolution was registered with the Parliament of Ukraine to declare 24 March the Memorial Day of the Victims of Polish state genocide against Ukrainians in 1919-1951. It was authored by non-affiliated MP Oleksii Musii.

According to Karczewski, only open discussion can provide avenues for arriving at mutual understanding with Ukrainians on the common history. Poland must admit the truth about the Volyn tragedy, and its parliamentary resolution on the genocide was a step in this direction, he added.

"We should seek the truth. We made a brave and decisive step, because what Ukrainians did was genocide," he uttered.

On July 22, Poland’s Sejm adopted a resolution declaring 11 July a National Day of Remembrance of Victims of Genocide perpetrated by Ukrainian nationalists against Poles during World War II. The resolution claims some 100,000 ethnic Poles in total were slaughtered in the 1940s by Ukrainian forces.

Ukraine’s Ambassador to Poland Andrii Deshchytsia stressed that Polish MPs prioritized a politicized attitude towards the tragic events of 1943-1945.

President Poroshenko expressed his disappointment with the Polish Sejm’s resolution, as he called to develop a common attitude to the Volyn tragedy.

The Foreign Committee of the Verkhovna Rada was deeply concerned with the Polish resolutions, claiming that they are based on distorted and politically-biased attitudes to the tragic events of Ukrainian-Polish history.
