Kyiv Polytechnic Institute Named after Igor Sikorsky

Kyiv Polytechnic Institute will be named in tribute to the aviation pioneer Igor Sikorsky, the University website cites the Ministerial order signed by Education Minister Lilia Grynevych.

Its official full name from now on is the National Technical University of Ukraine "Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute."

Outstanding aircraft designer of the 20th century Igor Sikorsky was a student of this university. Later on, he became the first to design the four-engine biplane Russky Vityaz, heavy four-engine bomber Ilya Muromets, transatlantic airplane and first ever rotor configuration helicopter.

In 1918, Sikorskyi moved to the U.S. where he founded Sikorsky Aircraft company in 1923. He also designed the first American amphibian aircraft.

In June 2016, the Infrastructure Ministry of Ukraine launched online voting to seek public opinion on a new name for Boryspil airport. Sikorsky’s name was one of the options, it received 9,297 votes and was beaten by the name of Ivan Mazepa which was supported by 12,768 people.
