Imprisoned Sentsov: “I Need No Special Preferences”
Oleh Sentsov, a Ukrainian cinema director from Crimea who was imprisoned in Russia in August 2015, does not consider himself to be a ‘special case’ and ‘needs no special preferences’. He wrote this in a letter, which his sister Natalya Kaplan published on her Facebook profile.
"[There are many cases such as mine] in Russia and there is even more of us in Donbas. Some people were already freed, others are waiting and hoping. Everybody has their own story and their own imprisonment conditions. Some people are making media dividends out of us, but some are truly working to let us free.
Becoming a famous prisoner of consciousness to speed up the exchange — this is not my way. I don’t want to hog the blanket. I need no special preferences, I want to be just an ordinary line in the list. It is unlikely that I will be the last one to be released, but that would be a good choice," — Sentsov wrote.
"You don’t need to get us out for any price — this will not bring our common victory. Please use as as a weapon against our common enemy. We are not your vulnerability. If our destiny is to become nails for the coffin of the tyrant — we will be the nails."
As it was reported, Sentsov and Oleksandr Kolchenko, another Ukrainian prisoner of war, are imprisoned in Russia for ‘terrorism’. They were sentenced for 20 and 10 years respectively. Currently Ukraine and Russia are negotiating their release. The documents required for their extradition to Ukraine were signed in early April.
