Savchenko on Hunger Strike Again

Tuesday, 2 August 2016, 11:48

Batkivshchyna MP Nadiya Savchenko announced she was on hunger strike again, to protest against the ‘lack of action of the authorities and the international community’ regarding the release of Ukrainian hostages during a press conference on Tuesday, August 2.

Savchenko says that "the exchange of POWs and political prisoners with Russia is currently on hold, after this issue became political." She added: "I suggested the President real actions to facilitate prisoner exchange: we need to start giving people back first. However, those are not Poroshenko’s children who are held captive in Russia, and he doesn’t care about yours. That’s why everyone has to fight for their child, like my sister and mother fought for me. Go out to Bankova [Ed: where the Presidential Administration is located] and demand to meet the President and hear his report [on the prisoner issue] as a guarantor of the Constitution."

Savchenko reminded that today is 2 months and 6 days since she was released from Russian prison and that one the mechanisms to speed up her release was a hunger strike.

"I am going on a hunger strike again starting today. To protest against the lack of action of the authorities all over the world regarding the release of the Ukrainian prisoners, until the day we have positive results," the MP said.
