Austria to Review Refusal to Extradite Firtash to the U.S.
Austria’s Constitutional Court refused to consider the request of Ukrainian oligarch Dmytro Firtash to rule the extradition agreement between Austria and the U.S. unconstitutional. The Court informed Deutsche Welle on August 19 that this decision was made on July 2.
Thus, the court of appeals has no more obstacles preventing consideration of the appeal of the prosecutor’s office against the lower court’s decision to refuse Firtash’s extradition to the United States. The court of appeals suspended the consideration of this appeal while the Constitutional Court was reviewing the request of Firtash.
The U.S. accused Firtash of giving bribes worth a total of $18.5 million to receive a titanium extraction permit in India. He faces up to 50 years in prison and seizure of all his assets.
In spring 2015 an Austrian court refused to extradite him to the U.S.
