Yelchenko: Ukraine May Convene UN Security Council over Situation in Crimea
Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Volodymyr Yelchenko held an urgent press briefing on the situation in Crimea, following the actions of Russian law enforcement and the statements of Russian president Vladimir Putin, Hromadske reports.
He said that the possible convening of the UN Security Council is on the table "even at night if this becomes necessary." He also drew parallels between the situation now and in August 2008, when Russia invaded Georgia.
Yelchenko raised alarm over the words of the Russian leader that further meetings in the Normandy format are pointless. "The Normandy format meeting planned for September was a very useful idea," he said.
On Wednesday, the FSB accused Ukraine of two attemped subversive attacks in Crimea on 8 August which were ‘stopped by the special forces of Russia.’ The Defense Ministry of Ukraine said that such a statement by the FSB was nothing more than an attempt to justify reshuffling and aggressive Russian military actions on the peninsula.
The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko said that Russian statements blaming the Ukrainian military for ‘attempts to perform terror attacks’ in Crimea were fantasy.
