Deputy Health Minister Arrested for Bribe-Taking

On July 8, law enforcement officers detained Deputy Minister for Health Roman Vasylyshyn and his accomplice for bribe-taking, Kyiv prosecutor’s office reported on its Facebook page.

Kyiv prosecutor Roman Hovda informed that the prosecutor’s office and State Security Service (SBU) "completed an operation to disclose systemic bribery involving a top official of the Health Ministry. He was caught red-handed."

"We identified that he had created a system of collecting informal fees from health professionals for letting them work, including in Oleksandrivska hospital in Kyiv downtown," the prosecutor’s office informs.

Later this day, Dniprovskyi District Court of Kyiv put Vasylyshyn in jail until September 3. The court established a ₴2.1 million ($84 thousand) bail for him.

Vasylyshyn claimed he would appeal his arrest, as he referred that the prosecution put pressure on court. He will also start raising money to stand bail for himself. Larysa Sarhan, press secretary of Prosecutor General, informed that if the suspect was released on bail, he would have to wear electronic bracelet.
