Lutsenko: Military Should not Be Held Responsible for Breaking ‘Peacetime’ Laws During the War

The Verkhovna Rada should adopt a law to exempt military personnel who break the peacetime Criminal Code during wartime from criminal responsibility, Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko said on Facebook on July 2, commenting on the case of Valentyn Lykholit, call sign ‘Batia’.

The Prosecutor General said that this case "reflects the attitude of the state to its defenders who are not saints." He added that meanwhile the dignity of every ATO fighter as a defender of their country should be preserved when choosing pre-trial restrictive measures.

The court made the decision to jail ‘Batia’ for two months before the main hearing in his case without the right to bail. Later MPs were allowed to post bail for him and he was released.
