Bail Denied for Odesa Judge Who Fired at Police
Kyiv Court of Appeals extended the term of detention of Oleksii Buran, judge of Malynovskyi District Court of Odesa who is suspected of bribery, until September 18, the Court press-office informed.
On July 27, the court considered the claim of the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAP) and decided to change the measure of restraint for Buran imposed by Solomianskyi District Court of Kyiv on July 21. The previous decision allowed for releasing Buran on ₴435,000 ($17,400) bail.
According to the latest decision, Buran should be kept in custody until September 18, while release on bail is not allowed. This decision cannot be appealed.
On March 29, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) informed that Buran had fired on law enforcement officers and escaped while they tried to detain him for receiving a ₴500,000 ($20,000) bribe. Later on, he escaped from the hospital where he was found.
On March 31, the Verkhovna Rada agreed to detain and prosecute Buran.
