University Department Head in Odesa Caught Taking a Bribe
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) caught the head of a department of an Odesa university demanding students pay money in order to pass thesis defense.
The press service of the SBU reports that the department head forced her subordinates to make passing exams deliberately difficult for the students who were approaching thesis defense. After that she offered the students to help ‘solve the problem.’ The size of the bribe depended on the number of courses that students had problems with.
The SBU together with the police arrested the university official when she was receiving a ₴3,000 installment of a ₴10,000 bribe (about $400) for smooth thesis defense from a student. She could not explain the origin of another ₴4,000 in her office.
The criminal proceedings have been started and the pretrial investigation is underway.
