Soldiers in Desna Military Base Were Given Bad Food, Contract with Supplier to Be Terminated
The Defense Ministry is about to terminate ₴400 million ($16 million) contract with the company Vizyt which supplies food to the soldiers in Desna Military Base in Chernihiv Oblast, referring to the poor quality of food. This was reported by Dmytro Marchenko, the Chief of Development and Material Supplies Center of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, UNIAN informs.
Approximately 200 servicemen got poisoned by the food supplied by Vizyt in June 2016.
The Defense Ministry initiated verifications of the quality of food supplied by this company. According to the findings, its butter and cheese contained no animal fat at all, the preserves produced by the company were of extremely poor quality, and the caloricity of field ration was twice lower than declared in the certificate.
The Armed Forces conduct internal investigation of this incident and will request the Military Prosecutor’s Office to open criminal proceeding, Marchenko added.
Officials of the Defense Ministry involved in this scheme may be accused of high treason.
While the verifications of other food suppliers are ongoing, the Defense Ministry is preparing a lawsuit requesting to terminate contract with Vizyt.
The Defense Minister instructed to put in all military units the posters with a hotline where soldiers can report poor quality of the food.
