Parubiy Announces Changes Seeking to Prevent Fugitive MPs From Fleeing
Changes to legislation that would simplify the procedure of lifting immunity from MPs who are suspected of crimes and prevent them from leaving the country are being prepared in the Verkhovna Rada, according to the Speaker Andriy Parubiy.
"When we don’t follow the rules of parliamentary procedure, the court cancels our decisions, and you know that. When we follow the rules, it allows MPs enough time to leave the country, as happened with Mr Onyshchenko."
Parubiy said that he was for canceling parliamentary immunity altogether, but it required changes to the Constitution. He said that in case there was not enough votes to change the Constitution, they would seek changes to the rules of parliamentary procedure to fast-track lifting immunity and approving arrest.
