Six Cities to Register Marriages in One Day

The Cabinet of Ministers approved a pilot project in six cities to let people register their marriage in one day.

The pilot cities are Mariupol, Sievierodonetsk, and Kherson – for Ukrainians from Crimea and occupied territories in eastern Ukraine to get their marriage registered in just one day and return back – as well as Kyiv, Odesa, and Lviv.

"We will let couples decide on their own when they want to get married," Minister of Justice Pavlo Petrenko commented on the initiative. "I believe that local authorities will launch this service in two weeks. I invite you to come to these cities to get your marriage registered in just one day, without bureaucracy and long lines," he added.

PM Volodymyr Groysman joked, "What if we go ahead and prohibit divorce? I strongly believe that family is the highest value, and it’s extremely important that married couples are happy… But, you know, that’s a kind of dictatorship, and we are all democrats here."

Currently, couples have to wait at least one month between submitting the application and getting their marriage registered.
