Prosecutor General Calls for Legalization of Amber Mining

Amber mining must be carried out under the control of the state, Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko said on TSN news show, DT.ua reports.

The annual turnover of the so-called ‘amber mafia’ is equal to the required military budget of the country, and the criminal group that was arrested in Rivne oblast is only one-third of the structures that are mining amber illegally, Lutsenko claims.

"We need to make the business of the local population legal, and channel the money not to the pockets of bandits and [crooked] law enforcement officers, but to the state treasury," Lutsenko said.
