The Supreme Court is going to request the Constitutional Court to verify whether certain provisions of the new law on the judicial system abide by the Constitution, Chairman of the Supreme Court Yaroslav Romaniuk informed during a briefing on Friday, July 1, in Kyiv, Interfax-Ukraine reports.

He highlighted that the Constitutional Court can only revise effective laws, therefore the respective submission will be made only after the law enters into force.

Romaniuk underlined that this law did not change the status of the Supreme Court. "It remains the highest judicial body in the country," he said, "Thus, the new law cannot create legal grounds for the dissolution of the judicial system. It is about reorganization rather than dissolution."

This development concerns a law on introducing judiciary-related amendments to the Constitution which the Parliament adopted on June 2. These amendments provide for dissolution of the Special Supreme Court, Supreme Economic Court and Supreme Administrative Court, as well as the establishment of the Supreme Anti-corruption Court, Supreme Court on Intellectual Property and local courts to replace district courts.
