Italian Region of Liguria Recognizes Crimea as Part of Russia

Wednesday, 29 June 2016, 21:29

On Wednesday, June 29, the Regional Council of Liguria in northern Italy adopted a non-binding resolution calling on the Italian Government and Parliament to advocate for changing the EU policy towards Russia and Crimea, Genova24 reports. The resolution was supported by all members of the Council, initiative author Edoardo Rixi reported.

"It gives additional strength to our region in fighting the absurd sanctions against Russia which make our small and medium enterprises suffer," Rixi highlighted.

The resolution authorizes Liguria Council to advocate for lifting sanctions against Russia and to encourage the Italian Government to condemn the EU policy towards Russia regarding Crimea.

This is the second regional council in Italy to support the recognition of Crimea as Russian territory and calling to lift European sanctions against Russia. On May 18, a similar resolution was adopted in Veneto.

After resolution in Veneto had been adopted, the Italian Foreign Ministry confirmed that the country did not recognize the Crimean "referendum" in March 2014 and supported sanctions against Russia until the Minsk agreements are fully implemented.
