Source: Ukraine Imported Electricity from Russia

An emergency flow of electricity from Russia to Ukraine totaling 600 mW in accordance with the technical assistance agreement between the two countries because of a lack of electricity in Ukraine’s system took place on June 23, a source in the Cabinet of Ministers says.

The lack of electricity was caused by excessive use of air conditioners due to the heat. According to the source, gas and fuel oil power production units were not employed to produce more electricity locally because of a lack of fuel oil.

The price of electricity that flowed from Russia was $0.078 per 1 kW, whereas 1 kW of electricity produced in Ukrainian nuclear power plants costs ₴0.45 (or $0.018). However, out of a total of 15 power units installed in Ukrainian nuclear power plants, five are being overhauled, and only 10 are now operating, but not to their full capacity due to a lack of cooling infrastructure.

The Minister of Energy and Coal Industry Ihor Nasalyk previously said on June 27 that the Ukrainian energy system had excess power of 2.2 GW and did not need assistance from Russia. However, Russian  Minister of Energy Alexander Novak confirmed that Ukraine asked for assistance last week. This week, there were no further requests thus far.
