‘Mukacheve Shooters’ Accused of Terrorism Could Get Life Terms

The pre-trial investigation regarding four Pravyi Sektor fighters who carried out a terror attack in Mukacheve in western Ukraine in July 2015 was completed on June 24, and the indictment was sent to court, the Prosecutor General’s Office (GPU) reports [ed.: the text of this hyperlink is in the Ukrainian language].

According to the GPU, the suspects also committed a series of other crimes in Lviv and Zakarpattia oblasts in 2014–2015, including threats of murder using firearms and explosive devices, blocking roads with the help of vehicles and armed people, intentionally inflicting light and grievous bodily harm to law enforcement officers etc.

The GPU said that some of these crimes could be punishable by a life term or 15 years of imprisonment with confiscation of property. Pre-trial investigation is still underway for another five members of the gang.

On July 11, 2015 there was an armed conflict in Mukacheve after a meeting of representatives of Pravyi Sektor and MP Mykhailo Lanio. According to Ukrayinska Pravda, the conflict happened due to the difficulties in the relationship between Lanio and another MP, Viktor Baloha. During the interrogation, Lanio hinted that Baloha was affiliated with Pravyi Sektor in Zakarpattia. Baloha did not comment on this, but claimed that the conflict was the result of competition over overseeing smuggling in the region between Pravyi Sektor and Lanio.
