Igor Lutsenko: The President’s People are Involved in Illegal Construction
Motherland (Ukr.: Batkivshchyna) faction MP Igor Lutsenko has proposed the establishment of an interagency commission to counter illegal construction.
Speaking in the Verkhovna Rada on Wednesday, he said that companies involved in illegal construction in Kyiv were striking back, with all ongoing construction projects continuing and even those that were stopped with enormous effort of the public being set to go ahead, in particular construction in the so-called buffer zone of Sofia Kyivska (St. Sophia Cathedral), which is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
Lutsenko, who is known for his previous activism countering illegal construction, claims that the reason for this is that people from the Presidential Administration and Petro Poroshenko Bloc in the Verkhovna Rada were included on the list of founders of the construction company in question.
The MP said that the problem of illegal construction was pervasive and could only be solved with a comprehensive approach, which explained the need for an interagency commission on the issue. He added that current Kyiv authorities could not tackle it, and asked the central government for involvement as well as for Kyiv citizens to get ready for elections to change the balance of power in the city.
