Poroshenko Announces the Release of Afanasyev and Soloshenko
During a meeting of the National Reforms Council on Wednesday, May 25, 2016, President Petro Poroshenko congratulated everyone on Ukrainian pilot Nadiya Savchenko’s return and said that other detainees Afanasyev and Soloshenko would be the next to be released, due to severe health problems such as cancer and sepsis.
Poroshenko also promised progress regarding the release of other hostages, in no later than three or four weeks. He underlined all of this became possible thanks to the Minsk Agreements, as the West imposed sanctions on Russia for violating them. Now Russia has to release prisoners to negotiate lifting the sanctions.
It became known earlier that Afanasyev and Soloshenko were transferred to Moscow after Ukraine submitted a request for their extradition.
