Saakashvili Planning Active Role in Georgia Election

Mikheil Saakashvili, Odesa Governor and ex-President of Georgia, will actively engage in the Georgian Parliamentary election campaign—he told Georgian TV Company Rustavi 2, as reported by Interfax-Ukrayina [ed.: the text of this post is in the Russian language].

"Surely, I mean to come to Georgia and get engaged in the election campaign. While we are busy as bees here in Ukraine I consider the developments in both countries as two wings of the same struggle," Saakashvili said, "I am going to continue political efforts both in Ukraine and Georgia. I always say it publicly, no secrecy."

Saakashvili uttered that he remains the chair of the party "United National Movement" funded by him. "Nobody denies that it was me to fund the United National Movement, and I have my say in this party. We are dead sure to win the election in October, as we are a creative kind of party. We got new faces who will show what they are made of in the upcoming months," he pointed.

Saakashvili left Georgia after new President Giorgi Margvelashvili took office in November 2013. The Georgian General Prosecutor’s Office charged Saakashvili in absentia with regard to several criminal cases involving the embezzlement of some $5 million. Later on, Saakashvili was put on a wanted list in Georgia. He received Ukrainian citizenship before being appointed Odesa Governor.
