Ukrainian Court Rejects Aeroflot’s Appeal Against Crimea Fines

Thursday, 19 May 2016, 15:06

The Court of Cassation together with the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine confirmed the legitimacy of the resolutions of the State Aviation Administration of Ukraine that imposed fines of over ₴7.7 million (over $300,000) on Aeroflot Russian Airlines.

Despite the State Aviation Administration of Ukraine banning Aeroflot from using Ukrainian airspace, in 2014 the company operated flights in the prohibited area over the Crimean Peninsula, as well as take offs and landings in the Simferopol airport.

In relation to these violations the State Aviation Administration of Ukraine has written 57 protocols on violations, and based on them issued resolutions that impose the fines of over ₴7.7 million on Aeroflot.

Aeroflot went to court to challenge the legitimacy of the resolutions, but lost both in trial court and the court of appeals. On May 17, 2016 the Supreme Administrative Court of Ukraine confirmed the legitimacy of previous court decisions and hence the legitimacy of the resolutions of the State Aviation Administration.
