PM Won’t Close Zasyadko Mine

23.12.2007___ translated by Anna Ivanchenko

Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko is convinced that one must not close Zasyadko mine in Donetsk for the time being.

She stated it on Sunday during a briefing in Donetsk, reports Ostrov news agency.

“We believe that one must not close the mine. Instead, it must be developed with the help of reliable safety systems. We must create such safety control system so that tragedies of this kind never repeat,” said Mrs. Tymoshenko.

She also noted that all services regulating the issue of coal extraction at the mine “must speed up their activities so that works in safe areas can be resumed.”

Mrs. Tymoshenko stressed that presently the Cabinet of Ministers does not intend to terminate Zasyadko mine lease agreement.

“In spite of grave violations of lease agreement, we cannot go off halfcocked. We need to carry out a detailed investigation first and then decide,” said Mrs. Tymoshenko.
