Ukraine shows obvious progress in point rankings that assess the state of the economy in one or more close areas. For example, the tax burden ranking or Doing business ranking. Given that other countries do not stand still either, the progress of Ukraine in these rankings is positive and corresponds to the real situation. For example, according to a recent European Business Association survey, businesses believe the investment climate and business environment in the country improved considerably - the index has reached its highest level since 2011. ...Read more

Corruption cannot be measured by clear indicators, so all rankings related to this phenomenon only cover the extent of corruption perceived by Ukrainian citizens or residents of other states. So, we will measure the phenomenon reflected in the mirror of our perception, which is often rather distorted. For example, in Russia and Belarus, the population is practically not allowed to mention corruption. That is why these states are perceived as less corrupt than Ukraine, where, after 2014, there is a trend to speak about corruption. ...Read more

Rankings in this area understand freedom as the breadth of choice in access to a particular resource - economic, political, environmental or informational. Because of this, it is impossible to distinguish the main among many indexes: they all cover certain elements of the general picture. You should pay attention not to figures, but to the position of Ukraine relative to other post-Soviet states and to itself in different periods of its history....Read more

Ukraine has significantly increased spending on national defense, reform and modernization of the army. Despite this, Ukraine's ability to turn its potential into real military power leaves much to be desired.
In absolute terms, the Ukrainian army is developing, but from a very low level, at which it was at the beginning of 2014. At the same time, the countries of the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region have also radically increased their defense spending. That is why Ukraine will continue lagging behind in terms of military power compared to other countries. And given that the US is forcing NATO members to increase defense spending, the relative position of Ukraine in military power may move down....Read more

About the project
How is Ukraine perceived in the world?
Where and with what speed is our country moving? Objective answers to these questions are critically important for the future of our country. They will determine the level of Western partners’ support of Ukraine's, investment inflows and, eventually, economic growth. But even more importantly, Ukrainians themselves must have access to objective information - without this, a young democracy has little chance. There is no single index or ranking to answer these questions, but almost forty of the most representative global indexes give quite an objective picture of Ukraine’s successes and failures. For your convenience, apart from the general list, we divided the rankings into different areas, visualized the dynamics over the last six years and showed the geographical and global neighbors of Ukraine in the rankings.
Figures can speak, and you can draw a conclusion.
How to read the rankings
We tried to select the most representative indexes and make the disparate information more user-friendly. It should be remembered that each rating uses a different methodology and can rely on previous years’ information, which leads to a certain delay in responding to the current state of affairs.
Selection techniques
At the first stage, VoxUkraine analysts selected more than 50 most cited international rankings, in which Ukraine is represented. To finalize the list, we asked about 10 experts from different fields which indexes and ratings concerning their professional interests are most representative and relevant. At the second stage of the project, we divided most of the indexes into five areas: Economics, Freedoms, Human Capital, Corruption and State and Security. To level the effect of changing the total number of countries in the ranking and to objectively show and compare the dynamics of all the indexes that are part of a separate area, we indexed the results ranging from 0 to 1 (where 1 is the best possible result in the ranking, and 0 is the worst).
